1970年ヴァッサー大学卒業。1975年、ウィトゲンシュタイン研究で博士号授与（ブランダイス大学）。ヴァッサー大学助教授をへて、現在 ハーヴァード大学教授。著書 With Reference to Reference（1983）, Esthetique et Connaissance: Pour changer de Sujet （with Nelson Goodman）（1990）, Considered Judgement（1997）, Between the Absolute and the Arbitrary（1997）.
