ジョナサン・イスラエル

1946年、イギリス生まれ。ケンブリッジ大学クイーンズ・カレッジを卒業後、1972年、オクスフォードにて博士号取得。ニューカッスル大学、ハル大学を経て、1974年よりユニヴーシティ・カレッジ・ロンドンにおいて近代史を担当。2001年からプリンストン大学で教鞭を執り、現在は同大学の名誉教授。著書に、A Revolution of the Mind: Radical Enlightenment and the Intellectual Origins of Modern Democracy （Princeton, N.J., 2010）〔『精神の革命』森村敏己訳、みすず書房〕のほか、関連する著書として、Radical Enlightenment: Philosophy and the Making of Modernity, 1650-1750 （Oxford, 2001）; Enlightenment Contested: Philosophy, Modernity, and the Emancipation of Man 1670-1752 （Oxford, 2006）; Democratic Enlightenment: Philosophy, Revolution, and Human Rights, 1750-1790 （Oxford, 2011）; Revolutionary Ideas: An Intellectual History of the French Revolution from The Rights of Men to Robespierre （Princeton, N.J., 2014）; The Expanding Blaze: How the American Revolution Ignited the World （1775-1850） （Princeton, N.J., 2017） などがある。
