ルース・バーナード・イーゼル

1947年、ニューヨークに生まれる。1971年、イェール大学博士号（英語・英文学）取得。カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校とボストン大学で教鞭を執り、現在、イェール大学スターリング・プロフェッサー・オブ・イングリッシュ。18世紀から20世紀の文学、ジェンダーとセクシュアリティの歴史、文学と視覚芸術の関係についての研究を専門とする。著書に、Fictions of Modesty: Women and Courtship in the English Novel, Yale University Press, 1991, Harems of the Mind: Passages of Western Art and Literature, Yale University Press, 2000, Art of the Everyday: Dutch Painting and the Realist Novel, Princeton University Press, 2009, Picture Titles: How and Why Western Paintings Acquired Their Names, Princeton University Press, 2015（『絵画とタイトル』田中京子訳、みすず書房）など。アメリカ芸術科学アカデミー会員。
